Why Gold Colour Differs? Purity, Alloys & Finishing
The most common question some customers ask me is why 18 karat is so different across countries. So, in India, an 18 karat could be a little more dark yellowish, whereas, for some other countries, it could be lighter, and even when you go to different jewelers, you will see a different color of your 18 karat, 21 karat, or 22 karat. So, why does gold, even if it is the same karat, have different colors?
The reason is very simple: The alloy the jeweler used inside the metal.
So, when you say 18 karat, there are 18 proportions of gold, but the 6 proportions of alloys could be a little more of copper, it could be a little more or less of silver, and it could be a little more combination of some other metals. So, depending on the alloy and the color of the gold, the final effect would be different, could be a little darker or a little lighter. So, it is brighter when there is more silver in it, and it is slightly darker when there is more copper in it, but they add copper so that they can pull out finer designs of the metal.
The jewelers choose to add more copper if the design is very intricate, copper is very malleable, and they can create even delicate designs from it, but some jewelers prefer to keep silver more because they want a nice bright yellow color out of their gold. I hope this video was helpful.
